But does this work in the real world? A large-scale study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine set out to answer that question.

Background: The Problem with Sitting
Prolonged sedentary behaviour has become the norm for so many in the modern world. Advances in technology have reshaped our work, home, and social environments to require or encourage prolonged sitting. The researchers of this study mention that excessive sitting may increase the risk of many chronic conditions, poorer mental health, and mortality, and poses a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems.
Sedentary behaviour may also increase chronic disease risk partly through reduced skeletal muscle activity and reduced blood flow in the lower limbs caused by the sitting posture. Periodic movement may counteract these pathways by regularly reactivating metabolic processes and restoring blood flow.

Experimental evidence suggests that brief, regular movement breaks can counteract the harmful effects of prolonged sitting and improve psychosocial well-being. However, translating this evidence into real-world adoption remains a challenge. Before this study, the viability of movement breaks as a public health strategy with potential for scale across occupations, lifestyles, and demographic groups had not been evaluated.
The Study: Methods and Participants
This was a large-scale, pragmatic intervention called the Body Electric Study. It was embedded within an interactive podcast series produced by National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States.
Study Details
- Participants: 19,342 adults enrolled, with 11,484 initiating the intervention. Participants were predominantly female, non-Hispanic white, college-educated, and employed full-time, with a mean age of 46.9 years.
- Design: Participants self-selected one of three movement break frequencies: every 30 minutes, every 60 minutes, or every 120 minutes. The study consisted of a 7-day baseline period followed by a 14-day intervention period.
- Intervention: Participants took 5-minute walking breaks at their chosen frequency throughout all waking hours, across all contexts including work, home, and public settings.
- Outcomes: Implementation potential was assessed using validated measures of feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness. Effectiveness was assessed using measures of fatigue, positive affect, negative affect, work performance, and work engagement.
Participants self-selected their break frequency at enrolment to reflect real-world preference. The 60-minute arm was the most commonly selected dose, chosen by nearly half of all participants.
What the Results Show
Implementation Potential
All three arms exceeded the viability threshold for implementation outcomes. This means participants found movement breaks feasible, acceptable, and appropriate across all doses.

Feasibility was higher at lower break frequencies, meaning the 120-minute arm was the easiest to stick to. Acceptability and appropriateness were high across all arms, with the 60-minute arm scoring highest on both.
Effectiveness on Psychosocial Outcomes
Reported fatigue and negative affect decreased, and positive affect increased, significantly across all arms. Improvements followed a dose-response pattern, meaning more frequent breaks produced larger improvements.

Minimal important difference thresholds: fatigue = 1.33, positive affect = 1.30, negative affect = 1.00. The 30-minute and 60-minute arms exceeded thresholds for fatigue and positive affect. Only the 30-minute arm exceeded the threshold for negative affect.
Key Finding: Hourly breaks offered the best balance between feasibility and effectiveness, exceeding meaningful thresholds for two of three psychosocial outcomes while being the most commonly selected dose.
Work Outcomes
Among employed participants, perceived work engagement improved across all arms, and perceived work performance improved in the 30-minute and 60-minute arms. However, no work-related changes exceeded meaningful thresholds. Importantly, there was no evidence that movement breaks harmed work performance or engagement.
Momentary Effects
Participants reported significantly lower fatigue and higher positive affect immediately following movement breaks compared with time points without a recent break. Fatigue reductions in the 30-minute arm were significantly greater than in the other arms.
Practical Applications
The takeaway is simple: movement breaks are a low-cost, familiar, and broadly accessible strategy for reducing the harms of prolonged sitting.
- Start with hourly breaks: If you're new to movement breaks, aim for a 5-minute walk every 60 minutes. This was the most commonly selected dose and offered the best balance between feasibility and effectiveness.
- If you can manage more, do more: The 30-minute arm produced the greatest improvements in fatigue, positive affect, and negative affect. If your schedule allows, more frequent breaks are better.
- If hourly feels like too much, start with every 2 hours: The 120-minute arm was the most feasible and still produced improvements, though they were smaller.
- Don't worry about perfect adherence: Even participants who fell short of ideal frequency targets still experienced meaningful improvements.

Limitations of the Research

- Break duration fixed at 5 minutes: It is possible that longer breaks at less frequent intervals could be more effective. This warrants further investigation.
