You should not have to take my word for this. We want to factually see how much of a role, if any, increased sciatic nerve tension is having on the symptoms you are experiencing.
The Forward Bend Test
- Stand up tall with your legs straight.
- Bend forwards as far as you feel comfortable.
- Take note of how far you feel you can go, but also what you feel and where you feel it.
- Make a mental note of your symptoms and any limitations.
This simple test gives you a baseline. How far down can you reach? Do you feel a tightness or pulling sensation? Where exactly do you feel it - in your lower back, behind your knees, or somewhere else?
2. The Exercise: Elephant Walks
All you need to start with is something to lean up against - a benchtop, a table, or even a wall.
How to Do Elephant Walks
- Hinge from your hips: Bend forwards from your hips, keeping your back straight. Put some light pressure on the benchtop or surface in front of you.
- Throw your hips back: Really push your hips backwards as far as you feel comfortable. You should feel a little bit of tension down through the back of your legs, even behind your knees. This sensation indicates that you are targeting the sciatic nerve.
- Alternate your legs: Straighten one leg fully while bending the other leg at the same time. Then switch - bend the straight leg and straighten the bent one.
- Add a cross-body movement: You can also throw your hips slightly to the side that you are lengthening to really emphasise the mobilisation.
- Repeat: Perform 10-15 repetitions under strict control.

As you feel things start to free up, you might find that you can start to go a little bit further down into the movement. The key is to maintain control and not force anything.
3. Progressing the Exercise
As you become more comfortable with the elephant walk over days or weeks, you can start to progress the exercise:
- Reduce support: Start with some pressure on a surface, then gradually reduce the amount of support you are using.
- Go free-standing: Eventually, work towards doing the exercise without holding on to anything. This loads up the tissues more and provides a greater challenge.
- Increase depth: As your neural tension reduces, you will likely find you can bend further into the movement.
- Increase repetitions: Start with 10-15 reps and gradually increase as you feel comfortable.

- Notice any differences in what you feel and where you feel it.
