Neck strength is an underrated aspect of a healthy functioning body.

We spend so much time working on our upper and lower body strength, yet the muscles in our neck are no less important in the grand scheme of things.

Whether it be reducing the impact of concussion in athletes, or helping to ward off everyday issues like headaches, neck pain, and jaw pain, neck strength needn't be an afterthought. Especially when considering how simple basic neck strength exercises can be.

In this video, I go through some simple ways to strengthen your neck with no equipment at home, and also how to scale it up if you have some equipment to play with. And yes, the Iron Neck makes a strong showing at the end.

Neck Strength Exercises for Beginners

The video demonstrates simple movements you can do anywhere, with no equipment. These include:

  • Chin tucks: A foundational exercise that strengthens the deep neck flexors and improves posture.
  • Neck retractions: Gliding your head backward while keeping your chin level.
  • Controlled rotations: Gently turning your head left and right against light manual resistance.

These exercises are perfect for beginners and help establish a baseline of strength and control.

Neck Strength Exercises + Neck Rotation

Adding rotation to your neck strengthening routine helps target the muscles that control turning movements. This is particularly important for athletes in sports that require head turning, as well as for everyday activities like checking blind spots while driving.

Isometric Neck Strength Exercise

Isometric exercises involve contracting the muscles without moving the joint. For the neck, this means pressing your head against your own hand in various directions:

  • Forward: Place your hand on your forehead and press forward against it.
  • Backward: Place your hand on the back of your head and press backward.
  • Side: Press your head sideways against your hand.

Hold each contraction for 5-10 seconds, relax, and repeat. This is a safe and effective way to build strength without heavy equipment.

Banded Neck Strength Exercises

Using a resistance band allows you to add progressive overload to your neck training. Anchor the band to a sturdy point and perform controlled movements against the band's resistance. This is a step up from isometrics and can be very effective for building functional strength.

Shrugs

While shrugs primarily target the upper trapezius, they also engage the neck muscles. Strong upper traps provide a stable base for the neck and can help reduce tension in the shoulders. Shrugs can be done with no equipment, or with weights for added resistance.

Headstands

For the more advanced, headstands (with proper form and progression) can be an excellent way to build significant neck strength. The video emphasizes safety and the importance of building up to this gradually. Never attempt a headstand without proper preparation and supervision.
